This Basic Credit Education Seminar focuses on How to potentially obtain MORE CREDIT APPROVALS and LESS DENIALS.
Also as important for each consumer to know the specific statute of limitations per the FCRA for each derogatory notation:
- Bankruptcy: Chapter 7, 11,and 13 can remain on your credit report for 10 years after the filing date. Ch.13 bankruptcy can sometimes be removed after 7 years from the filing date based on the credit reporting agency policy
- Charge-off accounts: This record will stay on your credit report for 7 years
- Closed accounts: if the account has delinquencies, those marks will stay on your credit report for 7 years from the date they were reported. Positive closed accounts can remain on your credit report for longer than 7 years.
- Collection accounts: Accounts sent to collection will remain on your credit report for 7 years from the date of the last 180-day late payment on the original account. The record will be marked as "paid collection" on your credit report if you pay the full balance. If you settle with collection agency your record will state the account "paid for less than total due"
- Inquiries: When a creditor or lender checks your credit it causes a "hard inquiry" to be listed on your credit report. These hard inquiries will remain up to 2 years and they can cause a drop in your credit score if there are too many of them. When your credit score is checked by an employer or when you check your own credit online, you may see a harmless "soft inquiry" on your credit report. Soft inquires do not drop your credit score and do not appear when a business checks your credit.
- Judgments: Most judgments, including small claims, civil and child support, will remain on your credit report for 7 years from the filing date. •Late payments: If you are late on a payment the 30-180 day delinquency will remain on your credit report for 7 years from filing date.
- Tax liens: City, county, state and federal tax liens are especially harmful and can remain on your credit report indefinitely if they are unpaid. Once the lien is paid, it will remain on your credit report for 7 years from the date it was paid.
- Repossessions: Most repossession is considered under the same category as charge off and can remain on your credit report for seven years.
- Foreclosures: Most foreclosures are considered under the same category as a charge off and may remain on your credit report for 7 years.
- Identity Theft: any credit challenges that occur as a result of identity theft can remain on your credit report for 7 years unless the consumer notifies their local law enforcement agency to report the matter to document the claim for the credit bureaus to remove the fraudulent accounts.
- Update Personal Information: erroneous personal information can remain on your credit indefinitely unless your properly document your identity(state ID/drivers license, social security card, and proof of address) to the credit bureaus and request for the credit bureaus to remove the inaccurate information from your credit file.
